How do you get people to read your content?

You’ve worked diligently to create a great social media marketing post for Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, or YouTube. You’re excited because you think it will draw a lot of interest.

Then you publish it and … crickets.

This is obviously not ideal when you’re trying to use social media marketing and branding for your business. So now what?

What went wrong?

It could be that your posts are either too long or too short. That’s right, there are ideal lengths for posts on social platforms that create more engagement.

Here are the ideal lengths for social media marketing posts via this infographic from Sutherland Weston:

Twitter: 71-100 characters

Tweets shorter than 100 characters are 17% more likely to create engagement and be retweeted.

Pairing text with visuals like photos, videos, or GIFs can improve engagement by 650%

Facebook: 40-50 characters

40-character Facebook posts receive 86% more engagement than those that are longer.

Instagram: 125 characters

Keeping Instagram captions under 125 characters ensures that the entire thing displays in the Instagram feed.

LinkedIn: 140 characters

LinkedIn will cut off your posts at 140 with “See more”. Keep them under this character count will ensure that your entire message will be seen in the feed.

YouTube: Title 70 characters + description 5,000 characters

YouTube titles with more than 70 characters will be truncated in search results.
